Choosing the Right Crawfish Sack

Are you looking for an easy way to store and transport your live crawfish? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Crawfish sacks are an ideal way to transport live crawfish without having to worry about the mess or hassle of transporting them in a traditional container. In this blog post, we’ll explore the history of how they’ve come to be, the amazing benefits of crawfish sacks, and the variations in the different types of sacks JohnPac has to offer.

The History of Crawfish Sacks

One of JohnPac’s owners, David John, has extensive knowledge on the history of crawfish sacks and shared some of that with us for this blog.

Crawfish sacks were initially used as onion sacks many years ago. Over time they developed into specific fabric woven to be used for crawfish sacks. However, modern day sacks use a heavier weave and drawstring which has twice the tinsel strength of a normal mesh bag.

What Are the Benefits of Using Crawfish Sacks?

Using a crawfish sack has many benefits, including convenience, durability, and cost savings. First and foremost, sacks are incredibly convenient. With a crawfish sack, you can easily transport live crawfish without worrying about them getting wet or damaged. The mesh material also allows for air circulation, which ensures that your crawfish stay alive and healthy throughout their journey.

Additionally, the durability of a crawfish sack is another great benefit. The mesh material is strong enough to hold the weight of the crawfish without tearing or breaking, making it an ideal choice for anyone who needs to transport a large number of crawfish.

Lastly, the cost savings associated with using a crawfish sack is another great benefit. Furthermore, by using a sack, you can ensure that your crawfish will remain alive and healthy throughout their transportation which helps to reduce the amount of money you would have to spend on replacing dead crawfish.

What Type of Crawfish Sack Should You Buy?

When it comes to choosing the right type of crawfish sack, there are a few things to consider. First, the size of the sack should be determined based on the amount of crawfish that needs to be stored or transported. Here at JohnPac we offer 2 main sizes of sacks; 35-40 lb. sacks as well as 18-22 lb. sacks. Contrary to popular belief, 35-40 lb. sacks are all made the same size regardless of color. Additionally, the material of the sack should be taken into consideration. Mesh sacks are the most popular type of sack, as they are strong enough to hold the weight of the crawfish without tearing or breaking.

What Are the Different Colors For?

Crawfish sacks come in 4 main colors:

  • Red: These sacks are typically used for peelers.
  • Purple: Due to the reddish color of pond crawfish, they look more appealing in a purple sack.
  • Green: For the more blueish-green basin crawfish.
  • Yellow: Usually for the graded, select crawfish.

A Tip for Transporting Crawfish

When shipping crawfish, it can be advantageous to use a wet burlap bag to cover the crawfish in transport. These bags can either be wet with water or even filled with ice to keep the crawfish alive and cool!

No matter which type of sack you choose, it’s important to make sure that the material is safe for the crawfish and that the size is appropriate for the amount of crawfish that needs to be stored or transported. Additionally, it’s important to make sure that the sack can provide adequate air circulation, as this is essential for keeping the crawfish alive and healthy.
